The Ferrari camp has been a bag of mixed emotions in the current campaign so far. With four races in, no one has been able to predict Ferrari’s performance on a given race weekend. In fact, each weekend has served up a different set of emotions for both drivers. For example, Carlos Sainz had a miserable outing in Baku, but Charles Leclerc was on pole twice and finished the weekend on the podium as well. A week later, the circus is in Miami and the tables have turned. Sainz has secured his best qualifying result, but thanks to his teammate’s misery. However, Sainz backed his teammate and gave an insight into Leclerc’s torrid time in Miami.

Sainz will start the race in Miami third on the grid. This is all thanks to Leclerc’s crash in the dying embers of the final qualifying session. The Monegasque slid out and went straight into the barriers, forcing a red flag welcoming the fans’ agony upon himself. However, as quoted by Motorsport-Total, Sainz revealed the unforced error from Leclerc might have justification.

“I also had my moments in the third practice session in the fast corners. We have a car that is quite unstable at high speed, which sometimes leads to mistakes,” says Sainz, defending Leclerc.

The race pace of Red Bull’s RB19 is head and shoulders above the competition. Sergio Perez is already starting the race on pole. However, a hungry Max Verstappen will make his way through the grid from P9. In a 50-lap race, Sainz fears Verstappen overtaking both Ferraris is inevitable.

“He will overtake us both,” admitted Sainz. “That’s usually going to happen because with the race pace we’ve seen this year, six or eight tenths a lap is a lot in a 50-lap race.”
