In a frenzy over a possible new regulation, the proposed ban on tire blankets in Formula 1 has sparked a wave of concern and support from unexpected people. George Russell amongst other drivers expressed his worries about the ban, stating that he was “very concerned” about its implications. Now, it seems that he is not alone in his apprehension, as various figures within the sport have rallied behind him.

Pirelli, F1’s official tire supplier, has expressed support for the potential tire blanket ban due to sustainability and cost concerns. But safety doubts were raised, and many made morbid predictions that colder tires without the aid of blankets will result in reduced grip, potentially leading to more accidents on the track. George Russell had voiced his opinion on the same, like his teammate Lewis Hamilton & even Charles Leclerc joining this bandwagon. Although, now Russell has got support on this from unexpected quarters at Red Bull.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has voiced his reservations about the proposed ban. Instead of an outright prohibition, he suggests finding sustainable solutions to power the tire blankets. According to Mirror UK, Horner said, “My fear with these things is that when you think you are going to achieve something simplistically that would create better racing, then there will then be a whole lot of effort go into trying to heat tires very quickly on out laps and so on that could drive a lot more cost.”

Christian highlights the need for a midway approach that considers racing dynamics and environmental impact. Russell’s concerns echo those of his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who has actively participated in dry weather no-blanket testing for Pirelli.

Hamilton views the ban as “dangerous” and “pointless,” emphasizing the potential risks involved. According to him, driving without tire blankets requires multiple laps to generate sufficient temperature, making the cars more unpredictable and prone to collisions. He believes that the argument for sustainability falls short, as heating the tires without blankets actually consumes more fuel.

The safety implications of using cold tires are a significant worry. George Russell rightly points out that the absence of tire blankets in cold conditions could lead to disastrous consequences. With tires not reaching optimal temperatures, crashes are likely to occur, posing a grave threat to everyone involved. Furthermore, the financial and developmental resources allocated to tire improvements could be better utilized in other areas, enhancing the sport.
