What a performance Lando Norris had at the British GP! He did better than both Mercedes drivers and finished P2, right behind Max Verstappen. With Verstappen’s dominance, P2 is considered to be the new P1 by fans. So, despite such a performance, why did Norris dampen Zak Brown and Co.’s spirits by trashing some aspects of their car? But his criticism of his own upgraded and much better performing car has met with a scoff from George Russell, who believes that McLaren shouldn’t have any more problems this season. Russell’s statements are bound to make Mercedes nervous.
Even after getting on the podium at Silverstone, Norris had something troubling him. In a post-race interview, he finally emptied his mind and spoke about his concerns. Norris said, as quoted by Mirror, “But we do have a poor car – and I say poor, I would say pretty terrible in the slow-speed corners, extremely difficult to drive.” But Russell, who is now probably in a car slower than Norris’ feels that the Woking outfit can keep repeating their success.
Russell said, as quoted by Marca, “I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be up there from now on. We’re coming from the Red Bull Ring, which is a very different circuit to Silverstone and they were a small step ahead of us on both occasions. I don’t know how they find so much performance. It’s been pretty amazing.” [translated via Google]

The Mercedes driver cannot change how McLaren progresses or operates. Like any human being ever, he can only change what is in his control. And to make progress efficiently, he’s decided to go back to the rudimentary concepts that make the difference. And he believes that he can beat any driver on the grid if he does so.
Russell said, as quoted by Mirror, “What I need as a driver is to maximize my performance and what I’m looking for from the car and just not to overthink things. I know that when I tick all of those boxes, I can beat anybody on this grid and I think it’s important that you do tick those boxes.”
