Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have been rivals ever since the two partnered at McLaren and ended up tied for second place. And now, being two of the oldest and most experienced drivers on the grid, Alonso’s resurrection has given us an opportunity to see the two battle each other again. But with that also came Alonso’s constant praises for the 7x champ. The one this weekend lasted for a bit before the Spanish driver made a U-turn to hail Max Verstappen.
Talking to the media during the ongoing Spanish GP weekend, Alonso said, “Lewis will be in contention for the eighth title.” Appreciating the Mercedes driver’s strengths and career trajectory, Alonso highlighted how the Briton was driving on top of the car despite the W14 being so hard to drive. But while Alonso’s praises have been a recurring event, he has quickly shifted base to appreciate Lewis’ latest rival, Max Verstappen.
As quoted by F1Maximaal, he said, “He has won the last two championships and is also leading this year. He is the toughest opponent in the starting field. It seems that he has no weaknesses. He doesn’t have bad weekends. He offers you no opportunities to take advantage of it. I know the Red Bull is a great car and they dominate, but it doesn’t make mistakes. Maybe we’re making it too easy for him because he wins by a big margin. We’re trying to put pressure on him to see if he’s going to make mistakes.”

While Fernando has never shied away from hailing Max Verstappen, he has put out a caveat saying F1 can be short-lived. This coming from a 2x world champion for the reigning 2x champion may be a little pessimistic, but he also added the positive side of things.
Nando said, “Until the regulations change in 2026, Red Bull will contend for the championships so there will be many chances for Max to win races. He is young, the calendar is longer than ever before, with 24 opportunities to win every year, so he can break the records along the way.”
