After McLaren’s first double-point haul at the Australian GP, Lando Norris was impressed with Oscar Piastri’s rookie campaign and praised the driver generously. On the other hand, Piastri also has nothing but good things to say about his teammate. Clearly, it goes on to show that Piastri is building a better relationship with his teammate than Ricciardo. But that’s not all. Piastri went one step further and bonded with the race engineer and made a statement about it. Let’s find out what the statement is!
Oscar Piastri is doing what Daniel Ricciardo couldn’t during his two-year stint at McLaren– getting in the team’s good books. McLaren took a big gamble after dumping Ricciardo by controversially signing rookie Piastri as his replacement. True to the remarks, the Australian’s performance is hardly been remarkable in the season so far. But those at McLaren are already convinced that he’s on a path to becoming one of the F1’s best drivers, including teammate Lando Norris.
The pair have spent five race weekends together thus far, on top of a pre-season aimed at helping ease their way into the 2023 campaign. While that has set their relationship off on the right foot, they are still learning about one another. Speaking about his relationship with Stallard, Piastri said, as quoted by SpeedCafe, “We’ve been working together really well. He’s got a lot of experience in F1. A lot of experience in elite level sport as well. With more race weekends, we’re getting to know each other’s style better and better.”

“We did a lot of work before the season to make sure we’re speaking the same language and working on the same wavelength. I think we did a very good job of that. There’s some things that you just don’t find out about each other until you’re under the pump in qualifying or in the race, but I think it’s been really, really good. There’s not been any complaints – just small, little things that we could change, but on the whole, it’s been really good working with Tom.”
Looking at Oscar Piastri’s big strides on and off the track, Zak Brown is all praises for his motivation.
‘We’ve got a future World Champion’: Zak Brown
Piastri came into the sport with a big reputation, having won both Formula 3 and Formula 2 championships. However, Piastri’s outing so far in the season didn’t exactly live up to the hype. But McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes his team has a driver line-up capable of “pushing each other” this season. Because although Norris has out-qualified his new teammate 4-1 in the opening five rounds, the average margin between the pair is just 0.067s.

So, talking about Piastri’s potential in F1, Brown told the media: “We’re very impressed with him. He’s certainly not really made any big mistakes. Typical exploring the limits so the odd lock of a wheel here and there but, he’s never been to Miami, he’s not been to all these races, so early indications are we’ve got a future world champion on our hands.”
“We just have to work to give him a faster car now. He’s very mature. He’s very focused and he’s very technical. So the combination of Lando and Oscar, I couldn’t think of a better combination of drivers. Oscar has done a fantastic job and he’s trading lap times with Lando now and that’s what you want.”
