It has been a rather untidy couple of seasons for Mercedes. In 2021, Ferrari surpassed them to take P2 in the constructors’ championship. Though in the 1st half of 2023, they have recaptured P2, progress has been inconsistent. Despite all this, their lead driver, Lewis Hamilton, has never been more sure of re-signing with the Silver Arrows, and he’s finally finalized his contract renewal with Toto Wolff. But he is well aware of the challenges that are yet to come for them.
All that is left now for the Briton is to put pen to paper and his future in F1 will be secured. But the progress on the W14 and then, next year’s car, will dictate if Hamilton is content or not with Mercedes‘ efforts. From the outside, the collective efforts of Toto Wolff and Co. haven’t led to substantial advancement. However, it is their ambition, backed by a strong desire to improve, that has convinced Hamilton to stay with Mercedes. Nonetheless, the graph won’t be linear and he knows that.
Hamilton said, as quoted by Motorsport.Nextgen-auto, “Upgrades are in the works for many races. It takes time to build these things, it won’t necessarily be very big every time but it will allow us to validate everything for 2024. We had a great meeting in July where we had all the heads of departments in the room, and just making sure we’re all on the same page, James (Allison) ensures great communication. We have 100 percent confidence in them, and as a group, as a whole, we will get where we need to be.”

For Toto Wolff, despite his close relationship with Hamilton, convincing might have been quite a task. But he looks to have successfully done it along with his team. Still, for him, all this hasn’t come very easily.

We have all seen the workload of the drivers throughout the year. They get more interviews and more chances to share their successes and hardships. But the relatively less shown side of the team’s journey is the Team Principal’s complex job. And that is no longer a secret, courtesy of Wolff.
“Getting the balance right is tricky,” said Wolff in Q&A on TikTok. “The hardest part of being a team principal is being able to juggle all the areas. There’s the racing side and the regulations, and then to keep working with our sponsors and having a long-term view.”

However tricky his job might be, Wolff is doing it very well. After turning around Mercedes once in 2013 and maintaining that performance, he has set out to replicate it for 2024. And what better way than to do it with a 7-time champion?
