You can take the person out of the place, but not the place out of the person. Adrian Newey might have left Red Bull owing to the tension within, but motorsport still runs in his blood. The technical mastermind competed in the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique on the May 11 and 12, not as a car designer, but as a driver. One particular lap in the race took the viewers’ breath away and that of his wife, Amanda, too.
Adrian Newey took part in Serie D of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2024. Taking the wheel of a 1968 Lotus 49B, the Briton competed with 13 other drivers racing F1 Grand Prix cars created between 1966 and 1972. While Newey could only manage P8 in Qualifying on Saturday, over 7 seconds short of Pole position, he made up for it in the race.
The ex-Red Bull CTO made up 4 places on Sunday to finish just short of the podium places, in P4. He even outclassed his Qualifying lap (1:41.183) by over 2 seconds on his fastest lap (1:39.121) in the Grand Prix. Moreover, his magical overtake on Nicolas Matile’s Matra MS120B in Lap 1 in the famous Fairmont hairpin caught everybody off guard.

After closely trailing Matile the whole lap till there, Newey made a bold overtake at the exit of the hairpin, taking the inside line. “Great Move! Not everybody can get past there,” exclaimed the commentator. Taking to social media platform X, his wife, Amanda Newey too reacted to this breathtaking move. She fell short of words as she commented “🫣👌🏻”, as her hubby channeled his inner Max Verstappen.

On the flip side, there have been speculations of Newey retiring after his RB17 Hypercar project ends. But two F1 possibilities remain open – Ferrari and Aston Martin. Helmut Marko, who had initially hinted at Newey moving to the latter, also seemed to have changed his stance.

Helmut Marko switches his bet on Adrian Newey’s F1 future
Notably, Adrian Newey has been linked with three teams following his Red Bull exit – Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Williams. The team in Scarlet Red are favorites to secure the technical mastermind over the teams in green and blue. Helmut Marko had initially said that “anything is possible with a great colour like green” for Newey, referring to Aston Martin.
Only a few days after that, the Red Bull advisor has said that his words were misunderstood. “I was obviously misunderstood,” he told OE24 about the earlier AMR prediction. “I would rather guess red,” he added, hinting at Ferrari being the favorite to sign Newey.
