As time passes, we get more updates as to what is happening with Adrian Newey’s career. The mastermind behind the RB20 is said to be leaving Red Bull due to the unstable situations with the management. Despite building a winning car at Red Bull, Newey has reached a tipping point in his career where he might just leave the team he has been loyal to for 20 years.
Loyalty looks like it’s at its most fragile state in Formula 1, with Ferrari making even Lewis Hamilton leave Mercedes. Ferrari is after all the big names and now that Newey is not happy with his team, the Prancing Horses are shooting their shot. But as more rumors of the engineer moving to Ferrari surface, the more people talk about it, including Newey’s old friend, Ivan Capelli.

According to F1ngenerale, during an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Ivan Capelli spoke about his reaction to hearing the Adrian Newey transfer news. Capelli stated, “At 65, leaving is an important challenge in which everything is put back into play. And in any case, I have to say that logically it won’t go away on its own. An engineer of that caliber brings his followers with him, given that in a new structure he will have to be immediately operational and active, whenever that happens.”
The Former race car driver stated, “From what I can know of his thoughts, it is unlikely he will come to Italy unless there is a proposal economical that would make anyone pale.” With this, he explained how moving to Italy would be a big decision for Newey instead of staying within his own country. Capelli added, “By habit, by conceptuality of work and mental organization, and by how he is used to, I still see him as very rooted in England. As I said, for me it would come with his lieutenants. And there would be a further revolution that might not give an immediate result.”

Ultimately, Capelli believes that Adrian Newey is comfortable settling in England and working with Red Bull as he is habituated to the work culture there. That being said, even if Adrian Newey decides to move to Ferrari, he would have to sit out in 2025 as the gardening period before he can join the team. For Newey to join Ferrari would be a big and sudden change as the engineer will have to uproot his life and move to Italy where he will work with a new team and might have to learn a new language.
Adrian Newey is still to tell Red Bull that it’s over
Adrian Newey has been in talks with Aston Martin and Ferrari for a while. Both teams are looking to increase their workforce and bring in as many key members are possible. That being said, while Newey has been spotted with both teams, he has not made a statement saying he will be leaving Red Bull.
