Is Red Bull Racing doomed if Adrian Newey jumps ship to Aston Martin?

Adrian Newey is officially off duty from F1, but the speculations over his next destination just won’t stop. As it stands, Aston Martin is leading the race to sign the ex-Red Bull CTO with Ferrari rejecting his request for a consultant role. There is no public deadline for him to announce his 2025 plans yet. But his Red Bull exit agreement stops him from signing a new contract before September this year. With a fair amount of variables in the mix, Newey has announced his next course of action.

As we speak, F1’s most successful designer is working on Red Bull’s RB17 Hypercar. Being freed from F1 involvement for the first time in 20 years, the 65-year-old is finally vacationing. But what happens after this vacation is what fans are interested in. Speaking with The Times about his future team, Newey said, “It wasn’t a big surprise when other teams showed an interest after I announced I was leaving. But I won’t make a quick decision about my future. I need a break to work out if I want to have another go in F1,” he emphasized, indefinitely delaying his contract decision.

“I don’t know what my future holds, but instead of dashing around the world to Grand Prix races this summer, I’ll be able to see my family,” Newey added, full of gratitude. “In June, Mandy (wife, Amanda) and I took our two Bernard doodles, Yogi and Benji, on a drive along the south coast for a week, which was great fun.”

Having won 12 constructors’ championships with 3 different teams, Adrian Newey would be a great asset for Aston Martin. Their new Silverstone HQ, spread over 400,000 sq. ft. will give the Briton state-of-the-art facilities under one roof. As per Formu1a.uno, Newey even had a private dinner with billionaire AMR owner Lawrence Stroll last week. But on the off chance this deal doesn’t go through, will the veteran choose retirement over another team?

Adrian Newey has ‘motorsport in his blood’

What’s your perspective on:

Is Red Bull Racing doomed if Adrian Newey jumps ship to Aston Martin?

Have an interesting take?

If the Christian Horner ‘power struggle’ has taught us something about Adrian Newey, it’s that he prefers to solely focus on work. 13 championships with Red Bull (7 Drivers’ + 6 Constructors’) is a testament to his expertise. Though his manager Eddie Jordan has refrained from commenting on the rumors, Newey has assured that he will remain in some motorsport category, if not F1.

“After decades working in Formula 1, I’ve become used to the nonstop pressure,” he told the Times. “If you’re not winning, you’re trying to understand why. And if you are winning, you are trying to stay there. That’s a relentless schedule, but motorsport has always been in my blood,” he highlighted, emphasizing that retirement is the second-best option.

Ahead of the British GP, Newey stated that the winter break would be his deadline to confirm his 2025 plans. But the astute businessman that Lawrence Stroll is, he won’t be comfortable delaying the decision till then, especially when the Red Bull agreement frees Newey in September. So mark your calendars for the whole of September, the announcement might be coming soon.
