“Through Goes Hamilton!” This piece of commentary was part of some of the most exhilarating racing action this season. While Lewis Hamilton had a pretty torrid time in the initial races of the season, he came alive at his home race at Silverstone. Recognizing one of his amazing moves at the British GP, the FIA awarded his move as the “Action of the Year”.

The FIA’s Action of the Year is Lewis Hamilton‘s overtake on Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez at Silverstone. Hamilton was looking to win at the 2022 British GP, but a late safety car ruined his chances.
Charles Leclerc who led the race, fell back after the safety car period and Sergio Perez was chasing him on fresher tires. Hamilton, also on faster tires, was treading just behind this duo in P4. As Perez attempted a move on Leclerc in the final chicane, he pushed Leclerc wide, opening the door for Lewis.

The Briton sneaked through to overtake both cars and move into P2. While Hamilton’s advantage did not last long, the maneuver was one of the overtakes of the season. The Silverstone race already had seen plenty of racing action, and the safety car towards the end just spiced it up even more.

Eventually, Hamilton finished P3 behind Perez in P2, with Carlos Sainz taking his first-ever F1 race win. The intensity of the action in the closing stages of the British GP was classic. And in that intense pressure, to deliver a move like Hamilton truly earns an ‘Action of the Year’ award.
Lewis Hamilton and his 2022 campaign
Lewis Hamilton did not have the best of starts to the 2022 season. A 7-time world champion who lost a title battle last year would have expected to redeem himself. Despite barring a podium in the season-opener in Bahrain, Lewis struggled to maintain pace in further races.

It was not until the Canadian GP that he returned to the podium. Despite the Mercedes car being slower than the top-two teams, Hamilton persisted on to produce a streak of podiums. From Canada to Hungary, Hamilton finished in top-3 for 5 consecutive races.
This streak also involved his potential challenges for wins at Silverstone and Hungary. Yet, for the first time in his career, Lewis finished a season without any poles or wins. On the other hand, it was his teammate George Russell who got Mercedes’ only pole and victory of the season.
