One may think what an amazing life Toto Wolff has developed for himself. The team principal of one of the best teams in F1 at Mercedes. Along with that a charming and solid personality in the F1 paddock, becoming one of the icons of the sport in the present day. Although, Toto never had it easy from the beginning, as the Austrian had to strive hard for it since his younger days.

In a video feature on the Mercedes AMG F1 YouTube channel, Wolff mentioned how he was during his teenage days. He said, “Not Very Good in School. Not Very Good in Sports. Not Very Attractive with the Girls.” It may be hard to believe, looking at Toto’s heartthrob of a personality, that he might not have been attractive to girl classmates in school.
Still, the even tougher fact to digest is one of the most successful team bosses in F1 currently struggled at sports. Toto has raced to some extent at the amateur junior levels. So, he certainly tried to make it as a driver and sportsman, before turning to management roles.
Though, now it can be said that the Mercedes boss has found redemption over his 3 big failures from his school days. Despite not having the best grades, if one can persevere hard to make a net worth of approx. $580 million, Toto has proved that academic shortcomings don’t matter at times.

Today, many see Toto Wolff as the ideal team principal in F1. Besides, he has got a great spouse in Susie Wolff, a former driver herself. The manner in which he has overcome his younger days’ failures is amazing.
How Toto Wolff got Into and Out of Racing
Toto Wolff never was interested in racing until before he got his driver’s license. At the age of 17, he once stopped by the Nurburgring with his friends, where he saw his friend Philipp Peter competing in the German Formula 3 championship. Looking at all the cars and the adrenaline in the paddock, Wolff got the ambition of getting into racing.
Although his racing career did not get past the amateur stages. The key reason was the lack of money. Toto ran out of financing to take his career forward in 1994. He was in the German Formula 4 Ford championship at that time, which is the equivalent of today’s Formula 4 or Formula Renault.

While the Austrian was capable of fighting for wins, he had to stop racing due to a lack of financing. Besides, he also saw new drivers who were quicker than him, like Nick Heidfeld and Alex Wurz.
Nonetheless, Wolff may not regret given his current success in F1. Being with the Williams team, Wolff steadily made progress in F1. Eventually, he got a shot at Mercedes in 2013 and the rest has become F1 folklore about his achievements with the Silver Arrows.
