George Russell won his first F1 race this weekend in Brazil. The Briton rose to the occasion and led for much of the race to secure an impressive victory in Interlagos. In a race filled with drama and action, Russell kept his composure and deservedly earned his first-ever race win. Moreover, it was a double delight for Mercedes as Lewis Hamilton finished P2 and secured a 1-2 for the Silver Arrows.

The Interlagos circuit seems to have a certain charm about it that forces the drivers to push hard. Russell and Hamilton did just that to earn important points for Mercedes in their bid for P2 in the constructors’ championship. George Russell will undoubtedly savor this moment for the rest of his life.

However, the Mercedes duo did not just clinch their first 1-2 of the season, they also broke a unique draught in the process. Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton’s former teammate shared an exceptional stat on his Instagram story. By securing the double in Brazil, F1 saw its first British 1-2 finish in 4,536 days.

The last British pair to finish 1-2? Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button in Canada in 2010, almost 12 years ago. The British fans would have certainly enjoyed watching two of their own standing on the podium.

After an extraordinary race on Sunday, George Russell crossed the checkered flag ahead of everyone else to win the Brazilian GP. He held off pressure brilliantly from his teammate. Furthermore, Lewis was quick to congratulate the former Williams driver.

Hamilton said, “Huge congratulations to George, this is a wonderful win for him. A bit more straightforward of a day for him than me, but still I’m grateful I could get back up there and get a one-two for the team.”

He also added, “He did an amazing qualifying [Sprint] yesterday, so he truly deserves it.”

The Mercedes camp was a happy one as they took home important points going into the final race of the season. They trail Ferrari by only 19 points.
