Yesterday was a tragic day for Red Bull as their founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, passed away at the age of 78. While the world mourns his loss, this would be a good time to look at one of the most prized possession that Mateschitz has left behind.

It is the luxury Fiji resort that was Mateschitz’s passion project. The Austrian bought the island of Laucala in Fiji from Forbes billionaire, Malcolm Forbes in 2003. Consequently, the Red Bull founder turned the island into the luxury destination of COMO Laucala Island.

Set on 3,500 acres of natural beauty, the landscape varies from volcanic mountains and lush rainforest to sweeping white beaches and coral reefs. The fantastical creation of the Austrian billionaire has become the home away from home for many celebrities, including George Clooney, Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey.

Other than its natural scenic beauty, Laucala offers a bevy of activities that you can partake in. Ranging from horseriding, kite-surfing, scuba-diving, and golfing to cooking classes, the island has something for everyone.

You can take a ride below the water’s surface with the DeepFlight Super Falcon submarine or relax at the resort’s glass pool, which appears to be floating above the Pacific. Not to mention that the stay would include a 90-minute spa session!

With its attractive possibilities set on a remote island, it is a dream come true for anyone, especially a Red Bull fan. However, the price is equally dreamy. As one of the most expensive holiday destinations created by a man whose net worth amounts to $24.7 billion, Laucala Island is priced at $4,800 a night.

The Austrian billionaire was not content with being credited merely as the founder of Red Bull and had more than one vision in mind. Dietrich Mateschitz truly created a small paradise on earth in the form of his Laucala Island project.

The Red Bull team mourns the loss of Dietrich Mateschitz

The Red Bull founder died at the age of 78 after suffering from a long illness. Sportspersons from all over the F1 community posted their condolences. But the people hardest hit by the death of Dietrich Mateschitz were arguably those at the Red Bull F1 team.

Max Verstappen put out a heartfelt Instagram post on the occasion of Mateschitz’s passing. He wrote, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for the sport but definitely for us as a team. You gave me the chance to compete in F1 and all the ingredients to succeed in the sport.”

Additionally, Verstappen said, “What he has done for me, my career so far, and in general my life, it’s really tough, it’s a really tough day. There’s still a race ahead and we’re going to try to make him proud tomorrow.”

And the Red Bull driver is not alone. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said: “It’s very, very sad. What a great man – he’s few of a kind. What he achieved and what he’s done for so many people around the world, across different sports, is second to none.”
