Both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell posted competitive times against Max Verstappen as they missed out on the pole by 3-tenths of a second. However, Lewis will be disappointed having missed out on P2 by the finest of margins against George Russell.
Talking to Bono, his race engineer after the qualifying, Lewis said on his radio, “Great work guys! Where did they find their extra speed”? Bono replied, “Straight line speed and turn 13”.
Mercedes have struggled all season with their straight-line speed. Their lack of speed on the straights was well evident at Suzuka as Lewis failed to overtake Esteban Ocon in the entire race.
