Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were teammates in McLaren back in 2007. Many consider the 2007 Formula 1 season to be one of the most exciting in history. Kimi Raikkonen claimed his first and only Formula 1 championship.

The Finnish driver claimed the championship in Ferrari with 110 points. Hamilton and Alonso both ended the season with 109 points, just one point behind the world champion. The Spaniard was handed down an infamous penalty for blocking his teammate in qualifying. In a recent interview, he looked back at the penalty that lost him the championship.

The luck factor is very important. I think Lewis had [the episode] of pit lane entry in Shanghai in the penultimate race. That was a bad time for him. I had two problems with the gearbox. I started tenth in two races.”

“I had one of the most unfair penalties in Hungary”

“From pole position I found myself starting penalized in Hungary. And if you lose the championship by one point, it hurts when it happens for something like that. It finished 109 all, but now I’m happy to see Lewis’ success,” he said.

Fernando Alonso’s former teammate has since conquered the sport after his move to Mercedes in 2013. In the hybrid era, their partnership has absolutely dominated Formula 1. Hamilton recently matched Schumacher’s record of seven world championships.

Alonso acknowledged that comparing drivers of a different era in F1 is not easy. However, he said, “Senna, Schumacher, Lewis were all giants in their time.” He further added, “you [also] need a complete package with the car.Lewis has had it so far and is proving it .”
