We know how much Max Verstappen pushes his and other drivers’ limits on the track. While sometimes he is praised for his racing style, sometimes he gets criticized for it. After a dangerous crash in the past, Felipe Massa slammed the Dutchman for being reckless. However, Verstappen did not take too well to the criticism and gave it back to the Brazilian.

The battle for P10 between Romain Grosjean and Max Verstappen at the 2015 Monaco GP was turning out to be a thriller. Max was on Grosjean’s tail as the race progressed to the 68th lap. While there aren’t many opportunities to overtake on the Monaco circuit, Verstappen did not pay heed to it. He made a lunge on the inside and clipped Grosjean’s rear right. The Dutchman crashed heavily into the barriers and saw his race end.

The FIA, however, did not take any action and that did not please Felipe Massa. Speaking ahead of the Canadian GP in a press conference, Massa said, “I think he needs to be penalized because what he did was wrong. First, he’s a seventeen-year-old and if you do something like that and you’re not penalized, it’s completely wrong.”

Verstappen replied, “I think everybody can have opinions, that’s the first thing. Maybe you should review the race from last year and see what happened there.”

Max was referring to the horrible crash that Massa caused at the 2014 Canadian GP. The crash was very similar to Verstappen’s as Massa went into Sergio Perez while lunging from the inside line. However, the Brazilian did not just end his own race, but also Perez’s. Both drivers took heavy impact when they went into the barriers in the last lap.

Max Verstappen slammed for his aggressive racing style

How different people define Max Verstappen’s driving style depends on which side of the spectrum they are on- Verstappen supporters or otherwise. While Lewis Hamilton termed it dangerous, Christian Horner thought it was his form of defense. Former F1 driver Bruno Giacomelli is not a fan of it either.

“Looking at the results, Schumacher has won seven world championships,” in 2020, Giacomelli told Motorsport Italian. “Fangio won five, but Fangio won them with different cars and at a time when people were dying, you know what I mean?”

“Do you know what it means to die? It means that [Max] Verstappen, if he had driven the 80s cars that I drove, would have died at least three or four times.”

“Nowadays drivers are no longer afraid in a Formula 1 car, because they are very safe.”
