15 Years Later, Lewis Hamilton Opens Up on Milestone F1 Moment at Canadian GP

The Canadian GP has served some memorable races throughout its time in F1, but fans will forever remember Lewis Hamilton and his epic victory in this venue back in 2007. The then 22-year-old rookie already looked like a seasoned driver with consistent performances.

But this victory marked the start of the era of Hamilton’s domination. The Brit was fearless and showed his ability, despite having the two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso, as his teammate. After he secured the pole, the then McLaren driver took it upon himself and controlled the race from lap 1.

And now, the F1 world celebrated the 15th anniversary of its victory last week. Ahead of this year’s Canadian GP, the man himself spoke about the ever-lasting triumph. He said, “Yeah, crazy. 15 years. I remember it. I don’t really remember that the rest of the weekend, but I do remember qualifying was epic.

It was actually the weekend I have been fighting for equal opportunity in the team. They used to separate the cars by two laps, which was basically the fuel, so it was worth a decent amount. I remember saying, just the cars the same, and let’s see who’s the quickest. “

Hamilton’s ability to defend was on show as the chaotic race ended, with him taking home the honors. He also revealed that the qualifying session was the turning point in his career.

“I, in fact, qualified pole, and that was a really big turning point for me. And then standing on top of the podium and seeing my dad smiling was really a very, very moving moment for me, because I think I never wanted to let him down for how hard he was working and how much he sacrificed,” he added.

Can Lewis Hamilton continue his Canadian GP streak?

Hamilton has the record for the most wins in the Canadian GP (7 wins). He shares the record with legendary Michael Schumacher. However, he is yet to taste victory this year amid struggling physically because of proposing issues.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been one of the Brit’s happy hunting grounds. “I love coming to Montreal…Canada always welcomed here. It’s got better and better every year. It’s got better with age,” he stated.

At the same time, Mercedes is not matching the pace of the front-runners this year. However, Saturday’s qualifying could witness rain, so Hamilton will look to capitalize on any errors.
