Lewis Hamilton recently shook the entire world by announcing a move to Ferrari, beginning next season. While that was the hottest topic for discussion, the second round of discussions revolved around who would fill that empty seat in Mercedes, which sits empty for 2025. No prizes for guessing that Fernando Alonso‘s name is one of the most pushed and speculated ones for the Brackley outfit.

While Aston Martin’s turnaround ended a decade-long wait for Alonso to be back on the podium again, he has still been waiting for his 33rd win. Though the Silverstone-based outfit came close to reigniting his dream, it has still been short of delivering it. And as changing teams for greener pastures is no strange feat for the 32x race winner, one tends to wonder if the Toto Wolff run team has crossed his mind. A close associate and Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa gives his take on whether the 42-year-old will renew his partnership with Lawrence Stroll run team or will seek a new challenge. However, regardless of the decision, Rosa asserts that Alonso needs to be around for the sport.

As covered by AS.com, Pedro de la Rosa says that the decision “is something that will only depend on him,” and that “all the pieces will fall into place when they have to fit,” because “the timing will depend on Fernando.” “The team is going to respect him,” said the ambassador, who is looking forward to seeing him on the grid for a few more seasons: “I hope he wants to continue, Formula 1 needs him. The only thing I hope is that it continues another year and, if there are two, better than one.”

Despite 2025 speculations, Fernando Alonso wants to break the decade-long dry spell at Aston Martin

The beginning of the 2023 season campaign for Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin delighted the old fans and new. Whilst the first half instilled hope in Nando fans for the 33rd win, he just had to curb his appetite at 8 podiums. During the launch of their 2024 challenger, when asked if there would be a consistent fight for race wins and podium, Fernando responded in the affirmative.

He said, “I hope so. I think it’s going to be a very very tight field and very expensive this time to make a difference. I think we have McLaren, we have Ferrari, we have Red Bull, and Mercedes, which within two or three tenths you can be fighting for the podium or out of the top 10.”

“So I think, to be into that fight is going to be very demanding for any team including us. But yeah, we want to be regular in the points. We want to be fighting for podiums as we did last year with eight podiums and I would love to have the first win for Aston Martin, the first win in green. It will be special and I hope I can be behind that wheel.
