There hasn’t been a person inside and outside Formula 1 who hasn’t given a suggestion as to what should be done after the incident between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in the last race of the season. However, former champion Jacques Villeneuve might have come up with an all-important solution for such incidents in the future.

Villeneuve is in the United States right now and preparing for a chance to have a run at the Daytona 500. And to prepare for a race of such prestige and difficulty, one has to study the sport properly, for a while, from all angles.

You can’t just walk in and race at the Daytona 500.

Anyway, it seems Villeneuve has observed something about NASCAR which he, albeit jokingly, suggests should be implemented in F1 as well. And to be honest, the ones who complain of the sport no longer being entertaining would probably welcome it the most.

Villeneuve’s suggestion about Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen incident

According to the former Williams driver, if an incident such as Abu Dhabi occurs in F1, “just let everything run free and then – as is customary in America – after an incident, fists would fly.”

But in all seriousness, that was a sarcastic alternate from the 1997 champion.

In all fairness, he suggested the need for “more precise” rules in F1 and even a “permanent race commissioner.” Villeneuve empathized with Michael Masi by pointing out the pressure the race director was under, “especially in the final five races of the season with the team bosses roaring in his ears.”

“I don’t think Masi did everything wrong in Abu Dhabi. It was right to give the race a go, but I would have let those who were lapped overtake one lap earlier,” he added.

Regardless, the world waits to see what FIA’s official investigation of the Abu Dhabi incidents determines. Because that will be the only ‘report’ of the incident, the rest are just opinions.

And if we’re taking opinions seriously on this level, let’s give Jacques Villeneuve’s opinion a go as well.
