After four disappointing and torrid years with McLaren, Fernando Alonso announced his shock retirement from Formula 1 to compete at Le Mans, Dakar Rally, and IndyCar. And during the two years of absence from the F1 grid, Alonso won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice while driving for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship between 2019 and 2020.
And the Spaniard has, once again, made his way to Le Mans, but this time to demonstrate the Alpine F1 car for a lap at the Circuit de la Sarthe. He drove the older Renault chassis using Alpine 2021 livery because of the rules restricting the running of current F1 cars during the same race weekend of Le Mans.
By doing so, the two-time world champion made history by becoming the first-ever driver to ride a Formula 1 car at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Alpine considering Fernando Alonso an ideal option for WEC car
The French manufacturers, part of the Renault group, have made their intention clear to develop a Le Mans Hypercar or an LMDh prototype for the 2023 or 2024 season. Alpine have currently collaborated with Signatech to develop a Hypercar. And they are successful in doing so, Alonso would be the obvious choice to race in it.
“He is one of the biggest ambassadors of the Renault group in motorsports and it would only be natural for us to carry on beyond F1, god knows when beyond F1 means for him,” said Alpine managing director Laurent Rossi.
“If we do endurance [racing] in the future it would be ideal at some point to have him in the team.”

Furthermore, Rossi revealed they are looking at various ways to carry on their presence in the WEC.
“It could be LMH, it could be LMDh: I am looking at it with a very positive, keen eye,” said Rossi. “I’m not going to go into too many details because there are elements to the decision and I don’t want to give too much away.”
