The 2021 Scottish Open had a captivating start to round two. There were plenty of players who started well but just messed up things while finishing the round. Jon Rahm was unstoppable on the back nine as he scored six birdies in his first nine holes.

While Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy also had a good back nine, Rahm’s scintillating round completely overshadowed them. But as the round progressed, all the players seemed to struggle and dropped a few shots.

Jon Rahm takes an early lead on day 2

The featured group of Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Rory McIlroy started their second-round from the back nine. And Jon Rahm had an absolute emphatic start as he made six birdies to go -11 for the tournament. Rahm continued the momentum that he got yesterday in the first round. His approach shots were impeccable as he was hitting the short irons and wedges as darts.

While Justin Thomas had a good back nine as he started with a birdie on the 10th hole. he dropped a shot with a three-putt bogey on the 11th hole. Thomas kept his game together and made all pars till the 17th hole, where he finally made a birdie.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy had a decent back nine as he remained bogey-free and scored a couple of birdies. He once again had plenty of chances to score birdies, which sadly, he couldn’t. But Rory seemed a better player in this round than yesterday as he was creating more chances but was slightly unlucky with finishing.

Going into the front nine, all the three players struggled as the conditions started to change a bit. The wind started to pick some pace, and the players seemed to struggle with their tee shots. Jon Rahm made a birdie on the first hole but dropped a couple of strokes on the 2nd and 4th holes. He seemed to grapple with his tee shots on the front nine as he missed many fairways. Jon scored 65 for the day and finished -11 for the tournament.

While even Rory McIlroy dropped a couple of shots on the 1st and 4th hole, he continued with pars till the 7th hole but unfortunately got a bogey on the 8th hole. McIlroy finished his frustrating round with 71 and remained -1 for the tournament. Moreover, it looks difficult for Rory now to make it to the weekend. The current cut is -2, and it might go up to -3 by the end of the round.

Justin Thomas, though, quietly kept his game going and made three birdies in the first five holes on the front nine. But unfortunately, he lost a stroke on the last hole. He scored 69 for the day and remained -8 for the tournament. Justin had a good round with his wedges and driver but struggled a little with his putter today.

Course conditions for the 2021 Scottish Open

The conditions for today have remained similar to the first round. The greens have remained on a softer side, making it easier for the players to putt. And there was no wind in the morning, but it is slowly picking up pace as the day progresses. So the players with the morning tee-time have a slight edge over the players who will tee off in the afternoon. Moreover, the atmosphere has become slightly heavier with foggy afternoon, which might change the pace of the greens and make putting a strenuous task.
