The defending runner-up Serena Williams trounced her long-time rival, Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open 2019 on Monday.
Serena Williams showed no signs of back problems as she stretched her winning streak to 19 matches against Maria Sharapova and now leads the head-to-head record to 20-2.
Serena Williams said in the post-match interview, “Every time I play against her, I bring out some of my best tennis.”

Serena also praised Sharapova after seeing her in the draw. She said, “I mean obviously, I’m going against a player who has won five grand slams and been in the final of even more so that never eases. Every practice after that was super intense.”
Eugenie Bouchard trolled Maria Sharapova for not putting a competitive show against the 23-time Grand Slam champion as the match lasted for only 59 minutes. The Canadian poked fun of Maria Sharapova on Twitter as she posted a picture of the match between Williams and Sharapova and wrote, “I am just here for the handshake lol”.

On the contrary, Eugenie Bouchard was also Knocked out by the 12th seed, Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round of the US Open 2019 on Monday. The error-prone Bouchard struggled with her accuracy as she committed 27 unforced errors and double-faulting four times.
