Was The Super Mario Bros. Movie not better than the 1980s ‘disaster’?

Recently, the very popular critical YouTuber penguinz0 held a podcast featuring the likes of Huggbees, zealotonpc, and kayaorsan. These four sat down to discuss a bunch of new happenings in the world of gaming, and as it always happens, some opinions clashed during this peaceful discussion. The biggest one is about the quality of the recently released Super Mario Bros. Movie; the movie that broke the record for the biggest opening ever for an animated film.

Huggsbees simply said, “I enjoyed it, but if you compare it to the 80s Mario Movie, the live-action one, which was a confusing awful mess, that one was far more entertaining as a product.”

When the other YouTubers were confused about his POV, Huggsbees gave more clarity to his statement saying, “I am not saying it’s better. I am saying the fact that it exists is far more interesting than this movie.” It’s a heavy statement indeed, and his companions did react to it in a polarizing manner.

Many fans to this day hate that movie with a passion. However, others just consider it a one-off mistake and a cult classic to just watch and laugh at. Maybe that’s exactly what Huggsbees was pointing at.
