Xbox is bulking up in every possible way. With the recent takeover of Activision-Blizzard, all eyes are on Xbox to see how they handle the increased responsibilities. Along with getting its own house in order, Xbox is also enabling its third-party studios to get their A-game going. According to a recent report, Compulsion Games, a Canada-based third-party member of the Xbox group seems to have beefed up significantly since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2018.
Compulsion has been working on South of Midnight for a long time. The action-adventurer is set in the deep south of America and explores the southern mythos in an eerie manner. This surreal teks you on a tour across the mysteries of the south and Compulsion looks more than ready to take on the challenge under Xbox’s tutelage.
Xbox subsidiary studio gains momentum ahead of new release

When Compulsion was taken over by Xbox it had barely 30 employees working in the studio. Now, an industry insider suggests that Compulsion’s current employee count has reached 100 personnel dedicatedly working on the upcoming South of Midnight. Compulsion’s LinkedIn profile shows a 100-employee count, which is the largest the studio has ever had. Considering how Xbox is scurrying to establish itself as the dominant name in the gaming industry, it’s no wonder that its third-party studios are getting some of the resources to develop themselves in the process as well.

Established in 2009, Compulsion Games hasn’t yet had a release that spread tremors across the community like its parent company. However, Xbox is looking to change that by providing more resources to the studio. South of Midnight recently dropped its trailer, which has won the Best Audio/Visual award at the Clio Entertainment Awards 2023.

Both of Compulsion’s previous releases (Contrast and We Happy Few) were interactive titles. This style is expected to be reflected in South of Midnight as well. The upcoming game has been claimed to be a “compelling modern folk tale” at the Clio Awards and will be released as an Xbox exclusive.

Xbox is all for inclusive growth
Recently, Xbox’s CEO Phil Spencer mentioned that Microsoft is looking to build an Xbox-focused community. This means gamers across platforms can be considered part of the family thanks to the wide range of services and products offered by Xbox. Along with that, Spencer also said that Xbox will empower its new colleagues to enable them to continue doing what they do best.
With such statements, we believe Xbox is doing everything it can to help third-party studios bring out the best they have to offer. As the community waits for a release date for South of Midnight to be announced, Xbox’s vision for a close-knit community looks well underway.
