Phil Spencer is known for his passion for video games, apart from being the boss of Xbox Game Studios under Microsoft. In a recent podcast, he revealed how did a “crash course” to know more about modern consoles. Eventually, he bought a Nintendo 64 and a PlayStation for this purpose.

It may sound weird to a lot of Xbox fanatics, but it’s true. Phil Spencer did have an experience with the competing devices from rivals such as Nintendo and PlayStation.

While discussing his craze for gaming in childhood, Spencer said in the podcast how he made a transition from Microsoft to the Xbox team. Initially, he didn’t know much about the modern gaming consoles ahead of the Xbox’s debut. Hence, he went for a “crash course” and purchased a Nintendo 64.

When I started in Xbox and when Xbox was launched here, it was really my first foray into console gaming, before that it was playing Ultima Online, playing mostly PC games at the time,” he said.

Continuing further, he said, “It was a crash course in console when I joined the Xbox team, I went and bought an N64 and the PlayStation and a bunch of things and just tried to figure out what is this controller…”

Phil Spencer also elaborated on this experience and his views on Nintendo 64 controller. Speaking about the design, he mentioned that for this specific console, someone needed to have three hands. But it was “cool” as it was basically two controllers in one product.

Yes, Phil is now more dedicated to Xbox, but as a gamer, he never shies away in praising various devices. He always speaks regarding whatever he feels about them.

In case anyone is not aware of the fact, he did work with Nintendo on various occasions. Both of them together released products like Minecraft and Banjo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
