Microsoft has introduced a new feature to their Windows and Xbox devices called “Carbon Aware.” As the name suggests, it helps Xbox to control carbon emissions by allowing one’s system to suit updates and downloads according to the carbon intensity data of their user’s region.

Previously, Xbox had a maintenance window from 2 AM to 6 AM. That will no longer be the case since the system will now rely on when a user’s power grid is using more renewable energy. As a result, a user’s device will now download updates and maintenance even during the day. This will significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels and carbon emissions.

Today we are proud to share some of the work we’ve done to offer carbon-aware game downloads and updates.

When will this update be released?

Xbox Insiders will receive the “Carbon Aware” update on January 12 and will notice their system switching to the shutdown (energy saving) power option. According to the American company, this one-time power settings update will reduce power consumption while the console is turned off. Furthermore, the rest of the users will receive this update soon.
