Microsoft’s Xbox recently announced the launch of their newest added feature in Xbox One. The devs were excited to launch the FPS Boost to the public. According to Microsoft, FPS Boost is a system-level feature that enhances the frame rate performance in select backwards compatible games without amending the original game code. It is an independent console update feature which gives a smoother gaming experience. Unfortunately, devs could not implement it in all the games of the console because of technical issues.

The feature is currently available in only five Xbox One titles. Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, UFC 4, and Watch Dogs 2 are the first set of games now available for the FPS Boost. The feature increases the frame rate by a massive four times in few and at least double in rest. According to Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management, FPS Boost is currently not possible on all legacy titles because of the original coding of the games. The designing of the games directly affect the original mechanics when run with FPS Boost.

Working of FPS Boost on Xbox One

When you think about it, this is a huge feature. In an official Xbox blog, the company mentioned how doubling or quadrupling the FPS on backward compatible games is an insane upgrade in smoothness. New Super Lucky’s Tale now runs on up to 120 frames per second. Similarly, UFC 4 delivers enhanced frame rate performance on Xbox Series S and can now run at 60fps. Further, Microsoft specified they are working on many more titles supporting FPS Boost. This week’s five released titles are just the beginning.

“What’s critically important to us is we always respect the original intent of the creator, so that’s why we’re able to do that at the platform level and then we work with the developer and the publisher and make sure that they still believe that this really aligns with what they originally intended.”– Jason Ronald on the latest Major Nelson podcast.

The reason behind more titles not getting the feature is because it changes the original intent or dynamics of the games. In some titles, animations “ran twice as fast, or physics running twice as fast.”

Although an increase in frame rate does not enhance the resolution of the legacy games, some still run at sub-1080p. Unlocked performance upgrades ensures Xbox Series X|S maintaining and keeping up with their top quality research. Xbox is working on newer titles with FPS Boost, which they will roll out soon.
