Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation have battled it out for years now. Although it looks like the companies are out to get each other, there is a unique bond between the higher-ups in the industry. While it looks like the companies would be absolute rivals, it’s important to note that they share most of their titles. With that said, PlayStation might be in the lead of console sales, but Xbox has another trick up its sleeve.
While PlayStation leads the race of being the most popular console, Xbox doesn’t fall short on specs. As we know Xbox has two current-gen consoles, the Series X/S. The PlayStation 5, on the other hand, is said to be getting a pro sometime next year. Considering that, fans have wondered if Xbox will be releasing some mid-generation upgrades to the series X and S.

The competition is stiff, and it appears to be time for Xbox to catch up with PS in the gaming sector. While each of the companies operates differently and has its own ideas about how to excel in the game, Xbox will adopt a distinct approach altogether. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer issued several press releases outlining his plans for the direction in which Microsoft will move.

Spencer based the decision not to pursue a new console on the feedback they had received. He stated, “That’s not the feedback we’re getting right now.” This suggests that they are actively listening to their user base and responding to their preferences. Microsoft currently has no plans to release a new version of the Series X with upgraded hardware, as they believe the current hardware meets their goals.
Phil Spencer emphasized their primary goal of delivering games that players want to play. This commitment extends to ensuring game accessibility on various platforms, including Xbox consoles, Game Pass, and cloud gaming services, thereby demonstrating a broader strategy for reaching gamers.
Xbox on upgrading the series S
Microsoft has launched an updated model of the Series S. Microsoft has launched this new console as a carbon black version of the Series S. It comes with a 1TB SSD, giving users a storage upgrade option. The release of the 1TB Xbox Series S coincided with the highly anticipated game, Starfield, which is considered one of the most significant Series X/S titles.

The main reason Xbox worked on a new Series S is to let players store more games on their console. As newer titles grow larger, Microsoft made this move to enable players to store multiple games on their console without requiring them to purchase the relatively expensive Seagate 512GB Xbox expansion card. Players might be wondering if an expansion card sounds like a good idea, but it’s important to note that it costs more than the new Series S.
However, what is interesting is that going back to FTC vs Microsoft, reported by The Verge, they are planning an upgraded Xbox Series X console in 2024 with new design and features. At least that was the plan until Spencer later talked about how their plans have evolved, meaning right now fans can only wait to see what exactly they are planning.

Despite Microsoft’s stance, it’s important to note that the competition, particularly Sony, seems to have a different perspective. Sony is reported to be working on a PlayStation 5 Pro console. This implies that Sony sees a need for a hardware upgrade in the near future. So with Microsoft prioritizing games and Sony seemingly focusing on hardware as well, it will be interesting to see the direction the rivalry takes.
