Game Science, the Chinese game developer, released a new trailer for its upcoming game Wukong: Black Myth. Developer Game Science has broken its silence on the game after the 13-minute announcement video we received last year. Fans were assured that this trailer was released only to bring in the Lunar New Year and would not reveal the story.
We don’t have too much official information regarding this new project. However, we do know that its story will be based on Journey to the West. This classic Chinese novel follows Wukong’s story right from his birth through his journey to learn Taoism and become immortal. On the way, the Monkey King acquires mastery in combat and 72-methods of heavenly transformation.

Black Myth’s trailer takes place in an area called Black Wind Mountain. Images of abandoned towns, decaying nature, and closeups of mythical statues all send chills down the viewer’s spine. The first bit of gameplay we get to see is three wolf-faced characters flying to face the Monkey King. Game Science has also showcased some new spells and transformations in this trailer. We can see Wukong transforming into a golem-headed creature that can walk through barrages of enemy attacks. Later on, we see Wukong freeze his enemies and his transformation into three rodent-like characters casting a lightning spell.

This gameplay trailer pays homage to the Lunar New Year in the way only a Wukong game can, ridiculously scenic boss fights. To signify the end of the year of the rat, we see the Monkey King face off against a sword-wielding, fire-breathing, two-headed rodent beast. The next clip brings in the year of the ox as we see a large minotaur-like character face-off with Wukong.

We can expect to see Black Myth by 2023 on both Playstation and Xbox. The game developers told IGN that it planned to go quiet “for a long time” to work on the game. Game Science is aiming for 15 hours of playtime and plans on including over 100 enemy types in the final game, including bosses. Additionally, the trailer also showcases the power of Unreal Engine 4 with some scenic images and battles. If Black Myth is anything like its predecessor, it will exceed expectations once again.
