This year Nintendo took the entertainment world by storm with their highly anticipated silver-screen adaptation of the beloved Super Mario Bros franchise. The movie’s theatrical run has been nothing short of extraordinary, shattering records within a remarkably short span of time. Surpassing the billion-dollar mark, the movie’s box office success has even outperformed Disney’s iconic film, Frozen.

Currently occupying the third position in the list of top-grossing animated movies, Mario’s cinematic journey sits closely behind the remade version of The Lion King and Frozen 2. In the past two months alone, Super Mario has surpassed the lifetime earnings of every Pixar, DreamWorks, Blue Sky, and Illumination film ever released.

Super Mario has generated a staggering $1.288 billion at the worldwide box office.  The movie has garnered an astounding $560 million from domestic box office sales and an additional $727 million from international territories. It has successfully surpassed the record set by Frozen a decade ago, which stood at a staggering $1.284 billion.

If the movie continues its impressive run for a little while longer, it has the potential to surpass Incredibles 2’s lifetime earnings at the domestic box office. If the Mario movie adventure earns $609 million more in the domestic market, it will earn the place of the highest-grossing animated film of all time in the United States.

So far, Super Mario has exceeded well-established franchises such as Despicable Me, Toy Story, and Ice Age. This makes it the highest-grossing movie of the year and the most successful video game adaptation ever.

However, as the movie reaches the end of its theatrical run, surpassing Frozen 2 would require a further $200 million in earnings, and beating The Lion King (Remake) would necessitate an additional $400 million. Considering the current circumstances, achieving these milestones would require nothing short of a miracle.

It was initially projected to earn around $130 million during the extended five-day holiday weekend, but it has since surpassed expectations by grossing an impressive $204 million. Being the third production that surpassed the billion-dollar mark, it has set brand new benchmarks for studio Illumination.
