Bethesda Game Studios has been making role-playing games for a very long time—since 2002, to be exact. The developer is known for making games where players get to explore vast open worlds. As these are role-playing games, they are sure to have some sort of leveling system. Bethesda even updates or changes this leveling system with each game. But it looks like Elder Scrolls 6 would go with a different approach.

Although Elder Scrolls 6 is years away from its launch, there’s still a bunch of information dropping about it every now and then. The latest update is that Bethesda might bring back the leveling system of a popular game with Elder Scrolls 6.

Every developer tries to put their own spin on a game’s leveling system. From straightforward to a bit silly, they are different but inherently the same. They all serve the same purpose, and they are all achieved by doing something repeatedly. In Soulslikes, players level up by killing enemies again and again and claiming their souls for leveling up, creating a circle of grind. In Skyrim, players do the same thing again and again to earn XP, eventually ending up with a skill point that they can spend on perks.

While it’s easy to compare and relate the leveling systems of Dark Souls and Skyrim, There’s no doubt there’s a sense of satisfaction in Skyrim’s way of doing things. Just beating your hammer on a blacksmith’s table might be boring, but at the end of the day, that’s how one becomes a master blacksmith, a skilled bowman, or maybe a proficient alchemist. The sheer simplicity of Skyrim’s leveling system makes it easy to approach and a breeze to understand. Maybe that’s the reason Bethesda is planning to bring it back in Elder Scrolls 6.

Yes, a former Bethesda design director has stated that Elder Scrolls 6 is currently 4-5 years away, but work has already started on it. He also added that the developer has made a decision to bring back the Skyrim-style leveling system with this game. Players would once again have to use skills to level up, instead of just using skill points to get better at them.

This is an interesting thing to know, given the fact that Bethesda tried changing this system with Starfield. It worked well enough, but maybe the player feedback was not what they were expecting.

There’s much in between now and the next Bethesda title.

While fans are very eager to get some sort of new information on the next Bethesda title, there’s much to come before it. First, Bethesda has to add all those promised features to Starfield, such as DLSS, etc. Then they have to release the Next Gen Fallout 4 patch that was promised last year.

And finally, there are planned DLCs for Starfield that might come out sometime in 2024 too. These things might be the biggest focus for Bethesda for the time being. This means their progress with Elder Scrolls 6 would momentarily be somewhat slow.
