With the recent conclusion of the Xbox Games Showcase, the company came bearing many gifts for fans. They showcased a ton of new games coming to Xbox Series X/S. However, missing from the showcase were titles for the earlier-gen console Xbox One. This console has been a crowd favorite since the day it came out but now has been superseded by Series X/S.

The console is on its last legs as more and more users shift to the latest-gen consoles. Now the company’s CEO Matt Booty has shared a not-so-bright future for the iconic Xbox One console.

In an interview with Axios, Xbox CEO Matt Booty talked about their plans for their earlier consoles. He shared that the game studios under Microsoft are adopting a collaborative approach and making better games over a period of time. Furthermore, he mentioned the studios have shifted their focus from Xbox One to Series X/S. All this is part of Microsoft’s strategy to deal with rivals like Sony and Nintendo.

Booty notably said, “We’ve moved on to Gen 9.” No new titles are being made natively for their earlier console. Furthermore, he also stated the studios are now focusing on just support for ongoing games, like Minecraft, on the older-gen consoles. He believes this is a necessary transition to make if the company wants to stay ahead of the curve from its rivals.

However, the studio has not completely forsaken the older-gen consoles. Along with providing support for ongoing titles, the games currently being made for Series X/S could also be playable on Xbox One. Players can use Microsoft’s streaming cloud tech to run the latest games on 8th gen consoles. “That’s how we’re going to maintain support,” Booty said.

All this looks like Xbox is trying its best to get ahead of its rival. And they have to take these radical steps as they are currently last in the console wars. In 2022 alone, Xbox lagged behind Nintendo and PlayStation. The Nintendo Switch sold the most units and the PlayStation 5 topped dollar sales for the year. Unfortunately, the Xbox Series X/S came in third in both units and dollar sales for the year.
