The Nintendo Switch is reportedly in its final year as Nintendo’s primary console. The company is said to be working on a powerful new console that would serve as its successor. Switch itself was an instant success when it was launched; almost every gamer wanted to get their hands on this unique piece of hardware.
Eventually, it became the third-best-selling console of all time. But recently, PlayStation 5 has left it behind in terms of sales. This led to people wondering if the Nintendo Switch 2 would be able to dethrone the PlayStation 5 in terms of success.

When PlayStation 5 launched, its initial sales numbers were pretty low; the reason being the low stock of this console. During that time, when fans were struggling to get their hands on a PlayStation 5, the Nintendo Switch was soaring in sales.
At the start of 2023, though, Sony announced that stocks were stabilizing, and fans caught up with this too. They really started getting themselves this next-gen PlayStation console. PlayStation 5 created history, as it had a record-breaking first quarter for any console, selling 6.3 million units during this time. Effectively selling more than the previous record holder, PlayStation 2.
Now the question that everyone has in their heads is, “Would Nintendo Switch 2 be able to break this record?” This question is valid too; Nintendo is the closest competition PlayStation has in terms of hardware sales. But the answer to this question is somewhat complicated, but mostly yes.

The reason is that, by its nature, the Nintendo Switch console is not a primary console for many. It is a handheld console that people use as a secondary one, and many do not even connect it to their TVs except for some rare occurrences. This was proven in a study done by Gameindustry.biz in 2020. This study revealed that 60% of Nintendo Switch owners have a PlayStation 4, and 51% of Switch owners have an Xbox console.
This means that if Nintendo Switch 2 comes with similar features to its predecessor and has improved graphic power and a better display, it would still be a secondary console. Many people would still buy a Switch 2, despite having a PlayStation 5 or Xbox. Ultimately, given the facts mentioned above, it only supports the question and Switch 2 has the potential to break the record put up by PS5 in the first quarter.
