God of War Ragnarök: Eric Williams takes the role of game director as Cory Barlog steps down
In the post-show stream, Cory Barlog and Eric Williams sat down to discuss some aspects of the upcoming game. Here, Eric revealed that he will be taking up the role of game director for God of War Ragnarök.
He further added that changing directors was usually a tradition at Sony Santa Monica and that the switch would bring a fresh perspective to Ragnarök. Eric described: “It’s always been a tradition here at Santa Monica, to change the directors across the games. We’ve had really good success with that. Corey is the only repeat director and rightfully so: he’s damn good at what he does.”
To which Barlog continued, “The important thing for us is to be able to get a fresh perspective each time, but also a fresh pair of legs in the sense that you’re really exhausted at the end of finishing one of these things. So you’ve got to con somebody else into doing it.”
Eric Williams has worked as well as has been a part of every God of War game released so far. While Cory Barlog has had the chance of directing 2007’s God of War 2 and the acclaimed 2018 PS4 installment.

When asked what Cory will be doing or not doing instead of Ragnarök, the creative director replied very vaguely by saying it was too early to share anything. Not wanting to leave the fans empty-handed, he did say, “We’re actually doing a bunch of stuff… it’s really exciting. All of the things that we’re doing and you’re tempted to know what is this, but I don’t really have anything I can talk about right now specifically, mostly because we’re really focused on God of War Ragnarök.”
While we still don’t have a release date for God of War Ragnarök yet, it was great to witness Kratos and Atreus return. There have been rumors that the upcoming title will be 40 hours long and it will be exciting to see how the new characters fit into the storyline.
