As technology becomes more sophisticated, new features and powerful consoles become available to gamers. When the PlayStation 3 was first released, people could not take their eyes off the screen because of how beautiful the visuals looked. PlayStation 4 elicited the same response, taking graphics to a higher level. When the PlayStation 5 was rolled out, people had no idea just how fast and incredible their games would look and feel.

Samsung leads the industry into a new era with next-gen GPU RAM

Those who purchased a PlayStation 5 know the significance of the upgrade when compared to the previous generation. Better graphics, better storage speeds, better visuals – it came with the whole package. The PlayStation 5 could compete with a gaming PC, despite being a console. But Samsung’s new GPU RAM can blow it all out of the water.

To give you some idea of where gaming is at the moment, we are currently on GDDR6, and the fastest card in the market is Nvidia’s RTX 4090. This card has massive power and PCs that contain it are expected to keep up with changes for the next 5-10 years. It runs at 24 Gbps, providing an incredibly fast bandwidth with no lag to the visuals at all.

But Samsung just changed all of that. Their new GDDR7 RAM has the capability of running at speeds of 32 Gbps while running 20% more efficiently than previous-generation cards. Running at an impressive bandwidth of 1.5 TBps, it leaves the competition far behind.

Imagine the potential it unlocks if it is paired with a console like the PlayStation 5. At the moment, PlayStation 5 offers a smooth 4K experience with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. If GDDR7 comes to the next PlayStation, gaming could go to an entirely new level.

Moreover, it is quite possible that if PlayStation 6 does include these cards, it gets upgraded versions of them. With the release coming soon, these cards will only get better. Can we expect to see higher resolution on the PlayStation 6 with better frame rates?

When can we expect these cards?

Last year, Samsung revealed its plans to work on the GDDR7 series of cards. Their pace truly shocked everyone. At the moment, this new range of cards is expected to come out sometime in 2024. However, gamers may be disappointed to hear the first application of these cards will be in the field of AI, given how rapidly the field is progressing now.

Samsung Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning Team, Yongcheol Bae, reported interesting news about the plans for this series. He said, “Our GDDR7 DRAM will help elevate user experiences in areas that require outstanding graphics performance, such as workstations, PCs, and game consoles, and is expected to expand into future applications such as AI, high-performance computing, and automotive vehicles.”
