Richard Tyler Blevins, famously known by his internet persona Ninja, is a video game streamer. He started his career as an eSports player, playing on various eSports teams like Cloud9, Renegades, Team Liquid, and Luminosity Gaming. But he saw success after becoming a full-streamer in 2017.
How did Ninja rise to the spotlight?
Ninja has been streaming since 2011, but he didn’t get much attention back then as he was also focusing a lot on eSports. But in 2017, he devoted himself to streaming. He started streaming Fortnite and got a lot of attention. Tyler had 500,000 subscribers on Twitch in 2017, but the numbers grew up to two million in the following year.
He became so popular as a Fortnite player that he got opportunities to stream with famous celebrities like Drake, Travis Scott, and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Further, he also won a Fortnite event at E3 2018, where he paired up with the famous EDM musician Marshmallow.
Ninja’s leave and return to Twitch
Twitch is the most famous live streaming platform, and Ninja was the first to cross 3 million followers there. Undoubtedly, he was the streaming king on that platform. However, he shocked the world in 2019 when he left Twitch to join Microsoft’s Mixer.
Many live streaming platforms like YouTube and Facebook Gaming compete against Twitch. So, Microsoft also joined the race, released Mixer, and made an exclusive contract with Ninja to get more streamers on board. However, the American streamer lost many followers from Twitch.
In 2020, Mixer failed to exist and merged with Facebook Gaming. Later, Ninja received a lucrative offer from Facebook, but he returned to his Twitch fans. Now he is streaming on Twitch with 18.3 million followers. However, he might still be the “Twitch King” but doesn’t have views like he once did.
The return of old Ninja on YouTube
The 31-year-old is not only a huge deal on Twitch but also on YouTube. He has over 23.9 million subscribers on this platform. He doesn’t stream on YouTube but shares his highlights from the Twitch streams.
Initially, he used to upload montages of his gameplay but later moved to share a particular section of a stream. Fans didn’t appreciate the change, and many complained about getting back the montages.
