Image reconstruction technology is the fututre of gaming. NVIDIA started this as they brought their now-popular DLSS to the public eye. It was first introduced in games like Battlefield V and Metro Exodus for those who were using the newly released RTX 20 series of GPUs. AMD, too, eventually decided to give fans a taste of their proprietary technology, known as FSR, in 2021.

For those unaware, these technologies are used to upscale lower-quality images to a higher resolution. They also result in a faster frame rate and sometimes even far better visual quality than usual. Now FSR 3 is coming to consoles to give gamers a far better gaming experience.

FSR 3 might be more impactful on Xbox consoles than PlayStation 5!

FSR 3, as mentioned above, is an upscale technology that reconstructs an image into a far better-resolution one. In gaming, this results in the hardware having to compute on a lesser load, and as a result, players end up with better visual quality and much better performance.

The good news is that FSR 3 is coming to consoles. FSR 3 is the latest generation of AMD’s version of this technology. It would debut on all gaming consoles in the coming months, and fans are really holding their breath for better-running games on their respective consoles. However, some are suggesting that PlayStation 5 users might not see much of these benefits depending on their choice of platform.

The reason is the fact that FSR 3 uses Microsoft’s DirectX 12 to function. The swapchain that FSR 3 functions on is based on DX-12. It helps with the asynchronous handling of optical flow and frame generation workloads.

This may not be an issue for the Xbox consoles, given the fact that these fully support DirectX 12 Ultimate. However, the problem would arise for the PlayStation 5, which does not have a DX-12 implementation.

Some might have a solution, though!

While the problem is massive, the solution might not be very far or complicated. It was revealed a while ago that the Unreal Engine 5 plugin actually supports FSR 3 implementation for both DX-12 and RHI. The official AMD website itself says, “The AMD FSR 3 UE5 plugin contains two backend types: RHI and Native DirectX 12.”

This could prove a silver lining for PlayStation 5 users, but not a very effective one. This means that this tech would only work on Unreal Engine 5 games for PS5, and its UE5 plugin does not support asynchronous handling of optical flow and frame generation workloads.

It remains to be seen what Sony and AMD do about this problem. If they don’t act, it will prove a big advantage for Xbox.
