Call of Duty is struggling to maintain its reputation these days. In the last few years, fans have expressed a distaste towards the long-running action franchise. Especially after the release of last year’s Modern Warfare II and its free-to-play extension in Warzone 2. These entries have failed to impress the community and now most of the players are looking for alternatives which can provide them a better FPS experience.

It looks like they have got some good options already while few others might be on their way! Gaming lovers have witnessed the potential of the upcoming first-person shooter XDefiant from Ubisoft. Some people have also called it a Call of Duty killer. But it’s not the only future rival to Activision’s successful IP. Interestingly, a brand new title from PlayStation studio Bungie has now made its appearance, through a massive announcement.

One of the major highlights from Sony’s recently held PlayStation Showcase was the official reveal of Marathon. It’s a PvP title, being developed by Bungie. Their team have previously worked on the Halo series and also the ongoing blockbuster franchise Destiny.

For those who are not aware of it at all, the project has been in the making for a long time. Marathon shares its name from the game Bungie made nearly three decades ago, in 1994. Speaking of this future title, it’s going to be a PvP extraction shooter. With this, Sony will try to expand its wings into the live service market after witnessing record-breaking success with multiple single-player releases.

However, when it comes to the evergrowing space of FPS games, many players will have their eyes set on Marathon. While currently, there’s no convincing rival to something like Call of Duty, soon this situation might end up changing. After XDefiant, a lot of enthusiasts will be keen to see the initial gameplay of Marathon in order to determine its potential to compete with Activision’s unmatched brand.

So far, the team of Bungie hasn’t shared tons of details on this project. But the director has mentioned that they are “creating opportunities for player-driven stories to unfold, stories that are integrated with the overarching game narrative. We’re building a world full of persistent, evolving zones, where players create their own journey with every run they take”.
