Baldur’s Gate 3 has been making waves in gaming ever since its initial release on PC and Mac in August. Now, with the PlayStation 5 version out and the Xbox versions on the horizon, players are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to immerse themselves in this epic fantasy world.

With games released on multiple platforms, a common question often arises. Will the game get cross-play compatibility?

Director of Larian Studios on Baldur’s Gate 3 getting cross-play

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Michael Douse confirmed that the game will soon be getting the cross-play feature. During the interview he stated “It was always in the planning,” he went on to add “But we knew it wouldn’t be for launch. It’s in the roadmap, and though we have an idea of when we’d like to get it ready for, we don’t want to put a date on it until we’re sure.”

 

The PS5 version of the game currently supports online multiplayer and split-screen local co-op. Giving more incentive for players to be able to play across platforms. However, there is no news as to when the function will be implemented, but according to speculations, it will be out with the release of the Xbox version of the game.

Does BG3 have cross-saves?

Baldur’s Gate 3 does come with a cross-save functionality, allowing players to seamlessly pick up their saved files between platforms. This functionality is currently available for the PC, Steam Deck, and PlayStation 5. The announcement of this feature led gamers to hope for a possible cross-play functionality, which is now confirmed by the devs.

Complications BG3 is facing with split screens

One of the main reasons for the delay of the Xbox version of the game is the fact that the split-screen feature. Although the devs have been facing issues with the performance of split-screen mode on the Xbox series S, the game works fine on the series X. That being said, the devs are working on getting the game ready with all features for both systems before its release.

During the interview, Michael also mentioned how they had to work around the split screen issue with the PlayStation 5.  He states that, while in the split screen mode, the PS5 changes the game’s framerate from 60 FPS down to 30 FPS to avoid lag. He went on to state that once these issues are resolved overall, they will be able to release the Xbox versions of the games too.
