Why Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions Is a Hidden Gem? and Why It Should Be Studied for a Basis of Modern Gaming?

Making a superhero video game is a really tedious task. As most of the time, it gets really blurry for an entire development studio to make a completely original and playable superhero game with a realistic approach to it. Although, games like Prototype, Infamous and Incredible Hulk, are some exceptions to extreme superhero games, games like Marvel’s Spider-man and Batman Arkham series are what our gaming systems have been able to best handle so far.

Although it is a really lengthy debate on why a superhero like Superman or Flash doesn’t have a proper game yet, the real question is, why even after so many years, there are only a few Spider-man games that are actually good. However, what much may not know about Spider-man games is that there is actually a hidden gem amongst many flop PS3 titles that actually need some praise to understand the current superhero gaming scenario.

Spider-man Shattered Dimensions is a hidden gem and a one-of-a-kind video game

Released in 2010, Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions has some really amazing features as a video game. This is mostly because the developers of the game, Beenox and Glu Mobile, were some of the most popular game development studios at the time. This also means the creative heads of the project knew exactly what they were trying to make in the first place.

The game revolves around a very interesting concept of 4 different spider-mans, all set in different Universes, namely, Spider-man 2099, Spider-man Noir, Amazing Spider-man, and Ultimate Spider-man. The 3rd-person perspective of the game also gave a unique approach to the game, as Spider-man Noir seemed inspired by Batman Arkham Asylum, while all the other three Spider-mans had their own personality different from one another.

It is also to be noted that Spider-man Shattered Dimensions is considered one of many inspirations for the 2014 comic-book storyline for ‘Spider-verse’, which was later adapted into a movie in 2018, titled, ‘Spider-man-Into the Spider-verse’.

Why is this game so special?

One thing that is really important to understand here is that Shattered Dimensions is the only game in Spiderman video game series that takes place in multiple universes. Although it is not very difficult to do today, 12 years back, when the game first came out, thinking of a concept with multiple universes and executing it perfectly was nothing short of magic.

Another thing about the game that is so fascinating is its graphics, which, although simple, still give the game a modern look that is actually complementary. This is also why many games should take inspiration from the game, as how a superhero game should be more variable than just a simple hacking-and-slashing approach. But also it has to be kept in mind that the hardware limitation of a game can be one of its greatest enemies, and that’s the same with Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions.
