Zelda developers reveal the secret of sound effects in Breath of the Wild

Sound effects were a key part of enriching a gamer’s experience in Zelda. The developer revealed how sound effects give the feeling to the player they are in the open world of Hyrule. The background music, sounds of wind, bugs buzzing, and birds chirping are some unnoticed things that are necessary for that feeling. Nonetheless, Breath of the Wild is full of overlooked details.

Talking about the challenges faced, the developer said the sound effect of Link holding onto equipment was the hardest task. He wanted to develop effects that would tell what type of material the player was holding by grabbing them. Using a lot of trial and error, he finally achieved this task.

Another challenge he faced was the generation of multiple sound effects at once. If Link held equipment like a shield and sword together, the code was triggering the effects all at the same time. He experimented with adjusting the time of the sound effects, but it still felt inefficient.

An unlikely solution to Link’s problem

He found an incredible solution when he noticed a stranger. Every time the stranger hit their feet on the ground, their shoulder bag made a noise. This gave the developer the idea of assigning code to movements done by Link. When Link steps with his right foot, only the shield makes noise, and when he steps with his left foot, the arrow makes noise, and then the sword at a slight offset.

“That’s why I made the sounds with meticulous attention to detail so that the customers who would play the game would feel comfortable,” recounted the developer. Finally, he praised Nintendo’s senior management for assisting him with his troubles.
