The last few hours have been quite exciting for two sporting worlds and the reason is eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. While the world of eSports is no stranger to top-tier associations, Lionel Messi making it to the list of eSports enthusiast investors certainly marks a big day for both communities. The reception is a glimpse of how strongly fans across the globe had rooted for such a piece of news. But Messi’s new venture, KRU Esports, is already being subjected to a strong comparison to another big soccer champion’s eSports roster.
With players like Rudd Gullit, David De Gea, Cesar Azpilicueta, Casemiro, and Gerard Pique, the list of soccer veterans exploring their fortunes in eSports is never-ending. However, Lionel Messi’s arrival in the gaming business has suddenly brought Guild Esports under the spotlight. Wondering why? Guild Esports, owned by Manchester United legend David Beckham, might be the first big competition for Messi’s debut in gaming.

The duo of David Beckham and Lionel Messi has been one of the most talked about partnerships since Messi’s move to Inter Miami. However, it won’t be the same case in the virtual sporting space. In fact, the former Barcelona and Manchester United legends may go up against each other in the line of gaming.
The rivalry between KRU and Guild is not a newly seeded one in gaming. Messi’s close friend and Argentine compatriot, Sergio Aguero, is the owner of KRU Esports. Now, with Messi becoming the co-owner of KRU Esports, and David Beckham being the co-owner of Guild Esports since 2020, fans are set to witness some interesting competition. What makes the comparison more spicy is the fact that David Beckham is also the owner of Inter Miami FC, Messi’s current club.
According to the profile statistics, Guild Esports comes out as a more experienced build when compared to KRU Esports. KRU Esports has earned a total prize money of $488,000.00 from 47 tournaments. Meanwhile, Guild Esports earned $2,259,544.21 from 104 gaming tournaments. These tournaments include Apex Legends, Rocket League, CS: GO, FIFA, Valorant, and League of Legends.
Performance-wise, Valorant has been the biggest contributing roster for KRU (64%) whereas Team Guild got the majority of its prize contribution from Fortnite (57%).
Revisiting a clash from Valorant Champions Tour Stage 2: Master Copenhagen
The last virtual battle between the two teams took place in July last year during VCT, Stage 2. The game went down the wire becoming one of the highlights of the tour. Remember the winner? Well, the last game before Lionel Messi came into the picture was won by David Beckham’s team. The final score was 2:1. Here’s the nail-biting Valorant clash from last year.
Recently, fans of the eSporting rosters haven’t been pleased with their teams’ performances as both Guild and KRU have failed to meet some expectations.
Analyzing the recent events of both the teams
Guild
The most recent achievement that brought the limelight was in fact an individual achievement. One of their Fortnite Pro known as ‘Chico’ had secured third position in the Fortnite Champion Series Final, the brand announced earlier this month. Chico won whopping prize money of $200,000.
Chico’s exceptional performance was praised by Guild Esports CEO Jasmine Skee, who also highlighted the caliber of talent the company can draw. As she congratulated Chico on behalf of the entire Guild family, Skee said that placing third in an event this difficult is an incredible feat.
KRU’s performance in VCT 2023
In 2023, KRU Esports had a really hard year. They failed to win a single game in the Americas League and were eliminated early in LOCK//IN. But they qualified for Valorous Champions 2023 and stunned everyone with an undefeated run in the LCQ (Last Chance Qualifiers).

In an interview after the disappointing defeat against Paper Rex, the Coach made some interesting remarks. “It was really hard for us to adapt to them or to know how we should react and play against their playstyle. Their pace and their rhythm was too fast for us and we just got run over,” he stated.
With both organizations planning a strong, promising layout for the coming tournaments, the rivalry would surely be epic. At this stage, both the rosters would need some advice from their owners to chin up like the legendary team owners. And who better to learn from?
