Following the release of Final Fantasy 16 on the PlayStation 5, fans dove into the game, spending hours upon hours questing through a new world. However, as happens with most RPGs, they found themselves getting lost in the expansive story. This is natural, given a world and narrative as massive as the ones in the Final Fantasy franchise. It looks like developers added a small feature that makes following the story so easy!

The Active Time Lore feature is a new addition to Final Fantasy 16. Its use is to provide context and details of where the story is at the moment!

Usually, in an RPG, the story takes twists and turns that see players quest from one edge of the map to the other. Along the way, it is easy to lose track of where the entire narrative is going, or even who the NPC you are talking to is. The Active Time Lore feature changes all that.

Essentially, it functions as a means of providing context. It works similarly to how Amazon Prime Video has the ‘X-Ray’ feature on their streaming platform. The Active Time Lore provides a list with names of characters present in the scene, what events transpired as well as the locations.

While most RPGs have some sort of menu that contains lore, it is usually quite limited. However, the Active Time Lore feature comes in very handy because it takes place in real-time. It can get quite confusing when characters get called nicknames instead of their actual names. It does not require you to open your browser and read through pages of the game’s wiki to understand the meaning behind the current season. It is as simple as clicking the touchpad on the DualSense. This opens up a menu that is quite easy to figure out. Pretty neat!

In addition to this, developers added a character who makes following the story easier. This is the historian Harpocrates. His job is to maintain a book called The Thousand Tomes. It serves as a continually updated document of the story. All you need to do is talk to Harpocrates at the hideout. Clive will narrate what he has done so far. It makes the experience of Final Fantasy 16 seem as if a novel is being written!
