Amidst the Super Mario Bros movie success, one of its directors has revealed an exciting secret about the ‘floating blocks,’ and here’s all you need to know about them. 

On April 5, 2023, Nintendo made its second attempt at the movies, releasing the Super Mario Bros movie. It was after 1993 that the franchise decided to do justice to the Italian plumber as he made his appearance on the big screen. The movie soared to uncharted heights right on the first day, bagging $195 million plus over the weekend. However, there was something that irked most fans as they could not understand the concept behind it. 

They were none other than the ‘floating blocks’ of the Mushroom Kingdom that failed to par the understanding amongst fans. Due to their iconic and dedicated snapshots, the clueless community wanted answers. So, one of the movie’s directors gave a  possible theory for floating blocks during an interview.

Why are the floating blocks in Super Mario Bros movie so iconic? 

During an exclusive interview with Variety, one of Super Mario Bros’ movie directors dived deep into the topic of ‘floating blocks.’ After all, it was something that every fan was eager to know, and it was time for answers. So, to break the bubble, Aaron Horvath penned down a plausible theory.

Before revealing the theory, it is important to understand floating blocks. Built by toads, these iconic blocks remain the center of attraction in the mushroom kingdom. According to previous theories, the fictional characters built it for construction purposes. But is that entirely true? Well, partly yes and partly no. After all, it differs a little from the explanation given by Horvath as he coins them with a dedicated word.

“Our idea was that there’s a mineral that’s natural to the Mushroom Kingdom, which we call ‘floatanium,’ because it sounded funny to us,” Horvath says. “The Toads mine it and transform it into these blocks and use them for construction purposes.”

Among many theories and speculations behind the blocks, the majority of fans consider those blocks built for powerups – something that the long-lost classics featured. Now, the real question lies in whether they were built for mere construction or do they have a mystery that Nintendo will unfold in the coming time.
