Naughty Dog celebrated The Last of Us Day 2021 with an official blog post about a multiplayer project. However, the timeline for the ultimate release has not been specified yet, but it definitely assures everyone that the devs are actively working on the project, and the project is expected to be shown publically when it’s fully ready.

In short, development is currently in full swing. Rochelle Synder (senior manager of communications) explained what’s going on with the project in a recent blog post.

The blog post mainly thanked all the development team inside the studio who worked really hard to deliver this masterpiece. The post also highlighted the success of The Last of Us II as it is the most awarded game of all time.

After recapping the sequel release, Synder said, “We are working on it. We see the community comments as many of you clamor for multiplayer and want updates. For now, we’ll say that we love what the team is developing and want to give them time to build out their ambitious project. We’ll reveal more when it is ready!

The blog post also contains a link to the job page to entice people who are interested in applying. Right now, the job page is loaded with different roles across multiple disciplines.

Currently, it is not clear if it will be a standalone release or just a part of the sequel. However, a tweet from Naughty Dog from 2019 suggests that the multiplayer will not be a part of The Last of Us II.

A job listing spotted way back in June 2021 mentioned Naughty dog’s newest adventure. All of these hints point towards a potential standalone multiplayer game.
