The latest Zelda title, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, is a definite treat for all gaming fans. The players follow Link on his journey in Hyrule traversing along many adventures. Link has also got multiple new powers as he can merge two items together and also travel through flat surfaces upwards. However, fans have noted that Zelda is not present in the current sequel’s gameplay. Many fans have begun to speculate as to where the princess may be.

Zelda and Link have always been side-to-side in every title of the Nintendo series. Sometimes Zelda plays a more active role in the title, and other times she’s simply there to be rescued. But she has never been a playable titular character in the series. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma answered this burning question. Aonuma stated, “We feel like what takes most priority is this idea of gameplay”. But he did not deny the possibility of Zelda becoming the next titular character.

If she fits the requirements for the gameplay that best suits the game, he agrees the team will be ready to give her a chance. But this all comes down to the matter of chance.

And agreeing to set her as a titular charter is not possible right now, due to the team also not knowing what the next gameplay or storyline will be. “With that said, of course, because we are not sure what the next gameplay experience is going to be, we can’t say what Zelda’s next step is going to be,” Aonuma said.

Although she cannot be a titular character in the series right now, fans can play her in the spin-off Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and also in the Super Smash Bros. series. Maybe this interview will prompt Nintendo to use Zelda in a more actively playable role moving forward.
