It all started in October 1994 when then the first PS console was released. Immediately after its launch, the device became a fast-selling product. Thanks to the debut of franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Resident Evil, the device became even more popular with gamers. As a result of this, the demand increased a lot for Sony‘s console.

PS1 sold 2.2 million units under a year of its debut. However, the biggest accomplishment for the console was that it became the first-ever gaming platform to sell 100 million units worldwide. It achieved this milestone within a decade after its release in 2004.

Following the success of the PS1, Sony came up with the PlayStation 2 in 2000, and, as expected, it turned out to be a well-received successor. Additionally, it also had the feature of backward compatibility for the previous generation of games from Sony. Thus, players were attracted to it more. Simply because they could enjoy classic titles from the PS1 era.

Then came the best phase for the PS2, in 2002, as titles like Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, and GTA were released. Gamers across the globe wanted to have these blockbusters and there was no other best option than PlayStation 2 to fulfill their wish. Speaking of its performance, then PS2 even outshined its predecessor completely. It finished 100 million sales in just five years of its release in 2005.

Sony then arrived with the PS3 in 2006, but it took its time to reach the entire globe in 2007 due to supply issues. Well, 2007 was also the year when the company’s one of the most iconic gaming franchises, Uncharted, saw the debut of its first entry.

But perhaps it was The Last of Us in 2013 that cemented PlayStation 3’s place in many players’ hearts. Naughty Dog’s first-party exclusive was a monster in terms of sales and smashed all the records upon its launch later that year.

Towards the end of 2013, Sony also announced its next generation of consoles with the PS4. Later in 2015, the company unveiled some of its best-known franchises like Horizon Zero Dawn’s first entry along with Uncharted 4. Zero Dawn came in 2017 and turned out to be a well-received hit title for the PlayStation 4.

By December 2019, the PS4 had sold 100 million units already, doing so within six years of its initial launch.

The mega arrival of the PlayStation 5

Eventually, Sony revealed its current generation of gaming devices with the PlayStation 5 in June 2020. It arrived later that year across the globe. However, due to the supply issues, the product hasn’t managed to register unprecedented sales so far.

Still, due to its craze among the fans, the PS5 has been a success for Sony. Especially with the availability of blockbuster exclusives like Returnal, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us 2.
