Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is one of the most successful games of 2023. And it is on that list for a reason. It appears Nintendo has put a lot of work into making this Nintendo Switch exclusive an appealing follow-up to the very successful Breath of the Wild.
They added a bunch of new and exciting abilities. Expanded the map of this game in numerous exciting ways. They also gave the story much-needed depth, doing the same for its characters. So much so that some say Zelda’s arc was much more interesting in this game!
Did Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom give Zelda a much better story?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild story was pretty nonexistent. Link walked out of his tomb and simply followed a voice on an adventure. That voice, of course, was Princess Zelda’s; he goes out and does what he is asked.
He gathers four companions, frees four divine beats, and then defeats Calamity Ganon in Hyrule Castle. Where was Zelda in all this? She was trapped inside the castle with Ganon, and she kept him trapped using all her power. She was basically a quest-giver in that game.

In the sequel, though, she is the most important story device. She kicks off the events of that game while exploring the chasms under Hyrule. And throughout the game, she travels through Hyrule, causing all kinds of trouble, until that shocking revelation that the Zelda people see is just a monster sent by Ganon to distract Link.
Later, it is revealed she has been traveling through time, preparing all the champions for Ganon’s second coming. And those champions, in turn, let their successors know that they needed to help Link. Her story is shown bit by bit throughout the game.

Hence, it makes sense when fans suggest that she was given a more important role and a better story arc in the sequel. In fact, everyone agrees that the story of this game as a whole is one of the best Zelda stories told in a while.

Goes to show how seriously Nintendo takes player feedback. They brought more dungeons, and they gave players massive chasms to explore. And on top of it all, there’s this story—a story that’s much darker and more detailed than players expected it to be.
