Three months ago, renowned director James Gunn, who is responsible for movies like Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, announced the new phase of DC. After the unimpressive performance of the previous DC cinematic universe, James promised a new beginning where they would dive way deeper to create a much more immersive and extended universe.
According to his announcement, this alternative universe is not only going to be bound by cinematic entries. The world and the story that Gunn wishes to create will span across movies, animated features, comics, and even video games. This notion is further confirmed by the recent statements of one of the higher-ups behind Warner Bros. Studios.

Although Gunn had announced the live-action and animated movies for the slate, he had given no teasers or announcements about other platforms. In a recent Q1’23 earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav spoke about the future potential of the company’s gaming profile and how it may contribute to Gunn’s universe.
“When we launch a product on Max or HBO, and when we have a game, that game belongs to us, but now there’s this In-Betweener. It may be in the next couple of years that we launch a Superman movie and… people spend more time and there’s more economics of people just hanging out in the Superman world and universe,” said Zaslav in the statement.

According to Zaslav, WB’s biggest strength is that they have complete authority over their IPs. Big names such as DC, Wizarding World, and Game of Thrones are all under their umbrella. Therefore, there is a lot of potential if they are used responsibly. Building a multi-platform-wide universe will allow the audience to explore these worlds and completely immerse themselves.
“The fact that we own all of that is something that I think is going to be really important as we look forward—as technology develops, and given the amount of time that people spend on gaming, we don’t want to be in the motion picture and long form storytelling business and have somebody else in the business of hanging out in those worlds,” says the WB Discover CEO. According to him, as technology improves as well as story structures, this new venture may also improve along with it. Becoming more and more profitable in the future.
