Nintendo has come up with some of the most popular consoles in history ever since it began making gaming hardware. Although the Switch is their current top seller, the popularity of the classic devices from the Japanese giant hasn’t faded away just yet. That might be the reason why they are still supported to this day, even after many years of their debuts.

According to the new report, the digital storefront, Steam, has added support for the retro Nintendo controllers. Gamers who love enjoying their favorite titles with classic devices like N64, SNES, or NES can fully rejoice now.

Nintendo 64 (N64), SNES, and NES controllers are now supported by Steam

As reported by VGC, Steam now supports the old Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo Entertainment System, N64, and Mega Drive controllers. However, this feature is only available to the users who are Switch Online members.

This news comes from the patch notes for the recent Steam client update, dated July 27, which simply says: “Added support for Nintendo Online classic controllers.”

Following the revelation of this description, Valve‘s spokesperson confirmed that the support is for the retro N64, SNES, NES, and Mega Drive. Although these devices have fewer buttons than the likes of new Steam-supported products such as the PS5 or Xbox controllers, they can still be used to enjoy indie titles as well as some of the best Nintendo classics.

Furthermore, gamers can also use the Steam settings to change a controller’s buttons. This way, it will be easier to play certain titles that weren’t designed for the retro Nintendo controllers.

In case anyone missed to keep track, the Switch Online ES controller was released four years ago. After that, the SNES was revealed in 2019, followed by N64 and Mega Drive controllers last year. As of this writing, the Switch Online platform consists of 93 NES titles, 72 SNES titles, 30 Mega Drive games, and 19 N64 games.
